Kelty Coyote 80 Backpack review

You never want to be alone while hiking or deep on a trail without access to your belongings. Multiple day adventures require you to pack many resources ahead of time to prepare for the trip. Carrying all of these tools and supplies in multiple packs can make the trip difficult or simply not worth it. To prevent having to bring multiple bags per person, many hikers look towards internal frame backpacks.

Having an internal frame backpack allows you to carry your entire camp and all of the supplies you need with you in one space for multiple days at a time. But how do you know which pack is right for you? With so many options on the market, it’s important to know the pros and cons of each one that catches your eye before settling on one. The Kelty Coyote 80 backpack is an impressive pack which offers many benefits when hiking, but is it the right one for you?

What This Backpack Includes

One of the special features offered by this backpack is the PerfectFIT adjustable strap which enables almost anyone to utilize it. Hiking should not be limited to one body type and Kelty has made attempts to promote this ease of access to everyone. Whether you’re on the smaller side of hikers or the larger, the PerfectFIT adjustable strap implements a one-size-fits-all mindset.

The top-heavy pocket allows you to keep building up on the inventory already inside. By stacking your belongings above your head, you’re boosting your center of gravity and promoting better hiking habits. If the pack extended downward, you’d be dragging the weight below you. If it extended outward, you’d be leaning back the whole hike. With the top-heavy pocket, you’re pushing your center of gravity forward and keeping the weight off of your back.

Pros

The Kelty Coyote 80 can store an insane amount of your belongings. It can hold up to 80 liters at a time and yet it only weighs about a pound more than the average base weight of internal frame backpacks. The adjustability of the backpack is also something not seen with most other packs of this size. The ease of use of this backpack is better than almost any other as it zips open like a suitcase to allow for better storage options.

Cons

The comfort of this backpack can fade as it can start to weigh down on the shoulders. The cushioning on the shoulder straps appears to be less effective than some others on the market.. The mesh fabrics seemed to simply give way rather than provide much support options. The way that the internal foam dispersed after one trip was unsettling as it would only continue after multiple uses.

Overall, this backpack is a fantastic option for longer hikes as it supports more weight and can store more. It’s one of the larger packs on the market, and lacks in comfort, but the dependability of the material more than makes up for its cons.
